St. George on horseback on the reverse. 53rd release of the modern British Sovereign.   The British gold sovereign was commissioned in 1485 by King Henry VII and remained in circulation during the reign of several monarchs. The sovereign was redesigned in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci and is regarded as one of the most beautiful coin designs ever struck. The Sovereign design has remained unchanged for over two centuries. The obverse side of the coin is graced with the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse side features Benedetto Pistrucci’s image of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. The featured 2009 gold quarter sovereign is struck in 22 karat gold by the British Royal Mint. The coin weighs just under 2 grams with an actual gold content of 1.83 grams.
